Waiting in the Desert: Finding Abundant Life When You Feel Parched

A couple of months ago, I mentioned that I was diving into the book of Job. If I’m being completely honest, usually when you open to Job, the immediate internal reaction is to close the Bible because why this book?

It’s hard to look at a story of such immense loss when you’re already navigating a tough season or one where you have to pursue the fruit of the spirit instead of it flowing naturally. I felt it so strongly that I needed to read it.

Lately, God has been connecting the dots for me in a beautiful way. I’ve been listening to Tauren Wells’ song, “This Is What a Miracle Looks Like.” If you haven’t heard it, it is a powerful reminder about what it truly means to trust and depend on God. The core message is that a miracle isn’t just the final, jaw-dropping breakthrough—the miracle is actually happening right now, in the middle of the season where you are actively waiting for that breakthrough. It’s the strength to keep trusting when you haven’t yet seen the fruit of your harvest.

It reminds me so much of what we talked about in my last post regarding how long fruit takes to grow. This is that season. The waiting season. The quiet growth season.

And during this time, I’ve come to a reminder: my environment dictates my endurance.

If I am not intentionally filling my life with living water—if I’m not pouring over sermons, blasting gospel music, and surrounding myself with community and people who actively pour life into me—my soul starts to feel like a desert. Without that intentional intake, I find myself feeling parched, empty, and barren. Psalms 42:5 says it best, “‘Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God‘. To put something is an action.

I’ve constantly seen evidence that I can’t survive this season on yesterday’s faith. Every single morning, I have to go before God just like Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:11, and pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.”

I have to intentionally redirect my mind and force my emotions to bow to Him. It’s not always easy, but I have to actively align them with truth because, ultimately, I want His will above my own comfort.

Here is the truth I have to keep reminding myself of: God didn’t design us to just survive the desert. If this was the case, the Israelites would’ve never had a Promise Land to go to. Jesus explicitly said in John 10:10, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Abundant life doesn’t start only when the harvest finally arrives. It belongs to us right now, even in the waiting. If you’re feeling a little empty or dry today, let this be your gentle invitation to take it one day at a time, change what you’re consuming, and bring your heart before Him. Fill your space with His truth, fill your ears with His praise, and watch how He turns that dry ground into a spring of living water.
